Crossy’s Record Breaking Dig.
On Saturday December 6 2008 Peter Cross broke the 24 year old record for highest Shires score in the history of Lane Cove Cricket Club when he scored an unbeaten 202 against Macquarie University at Northern Oval. Resuming on 61* overnight, Peter dominated every partnership, and the Macquarie bowling by achieving the Club’s first Shires double century from only 138 deliveries, his second hundred coming off only 54 balls. He also passed the previous first grade record of 188 which was set in the 1930s along the way. The innings contained 26 Fours and 7 Sixes and was scored in only 201 minutes. Peter was interviewed by the North Shore Times following his innings. The Article is reproduced below.
WHILE most cricketers dream of hitting just one century, Peter Cross hit his second double ton last weekend.
The Lane Cove Cricket Club left-hander hit 202 not out from only 135 balls at Northern Oval, North Ryde. Four years ago he scored 200 not out.
“It was pretty amazing,” said Cross, of St Ives. “I got to 100 as we passed their total and I knew we needed quick runs to put them back in again so I went for it and everything just seemed to come off.”
Macquarie University had posted 176 before Cross opened for Lane Cove and blasted 26 fours and seven sixes, with his team declaring at 6-317.
Macquarie were 7-140 in their second innings when play ended.
Cross, 28, has an average of 73 this season, with 511 in six matches, including 99 in the opening game.
And while he doesn’t consider himself a bowler, he has 1-13 from one five-over spell.
“I’ve been playing cricket for 20 years, including four seasons in the Sussex Country League in England,” he said.
“Now I just play because I love the game. It’s about having a few beers with your mates after the game – and we did that on Saturday night, that’s for sure.
“I’m enjoying playing at Lane Cove. It’s a good bunch of guys, I like the level of commitment and enjoy training, so I’l be staying here.”JOSHUA LEVI
Peter also got a mention in the Sydney Morning Herald’s The Fitz Files Team Of The Week the following Saturday;
Peter Cross. Lane Cove’s First Grade (Shires) opening batsman scored an unbeaten 202 off 138 balls in 201 minutes against Macquarie University on Saturday, becoming the first Lane Cove cricketer to score a double hundred in the club’s 116-year history.
This innings will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to witness it, and will be remembered in the annals of Lane Cove’s history. Macquarie University’s scorer Ian Wright kindly provided us with these score sheets, documenting the innings progress ball by ball, over by over, so you can relive your own piece of Peter Cross glory in your lunch break, on your way to work or before you go to bed. Marvellous!
