Huey, Dewey and …

Just when you thought you’d gotten away with it…

Achieving a globe is part and parcel of any cricketers career, be they mighty Ponting or mere Lloyd. Here at the Coves, a ring in the book is a badge of honour to set one on a pedestal above one’s peers. The Duck Bat has long been a treasured possession of some of the finer willow-wielders at the club, while the excellent traditions of circuiting in cricket whites or even in full kit are also long-standing ceremonial delights for those enjoying tragically short stints at the crease. For those unfamiliar with the terminology or past history:

The Duck Bat
Awarded to the cricketer who achieves the greatest number of ducks during the season. Since the Nick Sabine era bowlers have generally been exempt from this honour – however, anyone who isn’t a total nuffy is considered eligible. Craig Preston does not qualify. Therefore Wesley Harpham is the current holder, at least until last season is updated.

Whites/Pads
Any incompetent who manages to score three globes on the trot must venture out on the circuit in his cricket gear. If said unfortunate happens to have three golden (or worse) globes or manages four or more in a row, he must then traverse town with pads, box, gloves, lid and bat in tow. Such luminaries as Tom Holt and Shane Hunter have carried the Covie torch in Balmain and North Sydney respectively. Damian Naughton managed to make wearing the Covie whites look fashionable a few seasons back, as he hacked off the sleeves, put on the Calvins and pulled twin sisters. Iain “Davo Davo” Davidson attended the Covie Karaoke night in his finest starched cricketing creams, and cut a fine figure by all reports.  Jason Warn and Junior Harpham made a dashing pair at the Crows Nest Hotel, with Warny looking particularly resplendant in his cream and Carlton ensemble. Little Hig enjoyed it so much last year he does his best week in week out to ensure he circuits in his whites as often as possible. Even 1st Grade Captain Brett Richardsontook following in the footsteps of his predecessor a little too far when he followed Damian’s lead and hit the town in his Saturday best. No twins, let alone single females went anywhere near Brett though.

For future reference, trial game ducks count, but trial game runs don’t, so you’re on a hiding to nothing.  If that isn’t to your liking, don’t get three f’ing ducks in a row, Luke Higgins.

And so, the following (senior member) Coves will be a tad more nervous than usual when walking out to the middle of the park:
